Happy Birthday to Me!

On the 3rd I turned 21 years old.

I didn't know what to expect at all. I knew Silas was planning something big. He'd told me about three weeks before to leave my birthday wide open, schedule wise. I thought maybe he was going to send me flowers or something. Then about a week before my birthday I found out he'd also taken the day off from work and I knew something more than flowers was afoot.

I decided that it was best to just let it all play out. Silas is the best at surprises. After all, when he flew out to Oregon to propose to me I was the most surprised I've ever been. I still remember what he looked like walking up to our house and finding myself 100 percent speechless. Then, when he bought me my dream camera for Valentine's Day I was the most surprised I'd ever been. I knew better than to try to imagine what he might have in store for me.

The morning of my birthday I slept in and woke up to see this beautiful face. Love waking up to this.
I was terribly happy just to have him home from work for the day! Eventually he informed me that he had to go "prepare my present" but that he would be back in a couple hours. So he left and I went about being generally lazy and trying to be patient.

The mail arrived bringing me a present from Silas.
 What a good husband.
What an amazing husband.
What's more, I couldn't imagine what ELSE my husband might possibly have planned that was better than Godiva truffles!

You may imagine my surprise when Silas showed up with a person in tow. Silas came walking up the stairs and I saw someone behind him. I couldn't tell who it was at first. And then I realized I recognized the person... but my brain was not registering who it was. My childhood friend, KATIE NELSON DID NOT BELONG IN PITTSBURGH!!!

I was 100% completely speechless. Dear Silas and Katie, You got me. You got me good.
This picture was taken at Red Robin shortly after Katie's arrival. Katie had never been introduced the wonderful thing that is a tower of onion rings and I was craving a raspberry limeade... Ooo, my mouth is watering now just thinking about it...

Katie and I had a super de duper fun time over the weekend and I got to show her the things I love about Pittsburgh. She even came with Silas and I to go look at the house we ended up leasing! (Pictures of which I will post here soonish.)

And then she had to go. *sad face* That's the thing about being grown-up friends now. We have responsibilities and lives outside of trying to sail chickens on the pond, making up secret codes and languages, and going to highschool choir together. This is a good thing. We're moving forward into our adult lives and we're making new and different memories.

We've gone from this:

And I hope these pictures of us will continue until we are old ladies with grey hair who excitedly show each other pictures of our grandchildren on our cell phones.

  1. This man KNOWS surprises. That is SO AWESOME! Again, I am seriously impressed......

Oh yeah. Happy Birthday! This post IS about you too, I guess. Mostly I'm just thinking you have an awesome husband for surprises. =D Glad you had such a wonderful (wonderful) birthday!

  2. That's wonderful! I'm so glad you had a great first birthday here in Pittsburgh :). Hope the Red Robin came out and sang to you.

    I didn't realize you were 21. Awwww! :)

  3. Happy Belated Birthday!

And you got a keeper with Silas. What a thoughtful gift. :)

  4. Doesn't he realize that he can't keep it up year after year! He's creating HUGE expectations. Great gift. Very, very thoughtful.

  5. I am blessed to be part of your life! It was fun surprising you. BTW, it took me forever to figure out where that teenage picture of us was taken--my church! Something in my brain told me it was a Memorial Day picnic at the Youngs'. Remember those? :D Good times. I wish they still did the picnic.

Muse with me. Please?
